Everyone, sooner or later, we must make abstracts. We ask for them at school, college and work. In these contexts, we are expected to be able to summarize all types of sources: newspaper articles, novels, management reports, essays, speeches, business presentations, stories, movies, etc..

There are techniques for developing good summaries that anyone can learn. For your ability to synthesize and your skills improve summarization, you should familiarize yourself with the features of this type of text. You must also know the steps to follow to plan and write a summary.

A good summary accurately relates the central ideas contained in the original text. That is, accurate and in accordance with these ideas, and not away from them.

This feature imposes certain limitations when you make a summary. Your voice has to go unnoticed. Therefore can not comment, inference and analysis. Nor can add ideas, data or opinions on the subject you know from other sources. You should limit yourself to recap what we said the author of the original text.

All text is always built on patterns of similarity and repetition, and difference and variation. To carry out an analysis, you must be familiar with a vocabulary that allows you to clearly identify the parts you want to analyze the whole.

Thus, the first phase of the analysis of a text is “translated” into language that will facilitate the analytic work. A language or vocabulary that we have called categories of analysis. There are many different categories of analysis. The kind of text you want to study and discuss the look you want in a specific text analysis will determine which categories are most relevant to you.

In general, certain categories of analysis will be most useful to study narrative (stories, novels, movies, cartoons, etc.). Others will be better suited for the examination of poems and others will facilitate the analysis of academic articles and essays .

However, there are certain formal principles that determine the organization of most of the texts and, therefore, constitute a set of categories of analysis whose knowledge will be valuable not only to analyze large numbers of texts but also to create them.

This article will familiarize you with some of these basic principles of textual organization so that your analysis will become more serious, deep and relevant.
